Guide to IP Rating for LED Lighting

The IP Code consists of the letter IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. As defined in international standard IEC 60529, it classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects. The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof. The first number after IP represents the dust rate and the second number is represents the waterproof rate. The larger the number after the IP, the greater the dust-proof and water-proof grade of the product.

Protected from touch by fingers and objects greater than 12 millimeters.

#Let’s discuss some of the most common IP rating found in luminaires.

In our daily life, we see the most common lamp IP level is IP20、IP44、IP65、IP66 for so on. Different IP rating is applicable to different locations.

 

 #What IP level should be used in what situations?

1、IP20

When in the living room, because the living room is inside and it’s dry, so the IP rating is no that high. The living room is usually used with IP20.

2、IP44

When in the bathroom, because dust is smaller in the bathroom,humidity is bigger. So be about to use dustproof grade smaller and waterproof degree large lamp. Therefore, it is more suitable for IP level 44 lamps to prevent the entry of debris and water vapor.  For example:

3、IP65

When in the parking lot, due to large amount of traffic in the

parking lot, the dust is usually in the basement, so the requirements for dust prevention and brightness are higher. Further, it is necessary to use dust-proof lamps which with higher levels.For instance,the lighting of IP65.

4、IP66

When in the park, because have many pedestrians and be exposed to the rain. So higher requirements for lamps and lanterns,both waterproof and dustproof. In consequence, it is more suitable for IP66 level.
